There is a misconception that art, specifically performance and visual art, is too expensive to see. A couple of months ago, while backpacking in Austria, I attended the Vienna State Opera with a €4 ticket. This got me thinking about all the discounted art available around me.
Most theaters provide some form of student or senior discount when provided with an ID. However, there’s a part of your lifetime where no discounts seem to apply. Always check theater websites, though, for information on other potential discounts.
The Metropolitan Opera and American Ballet Theater offer rush tickets for $25 and $35 respectfully. The great thing about these ticket prices is that they’re applicable to all theater lovers, and, unlike lengthy Times Square Broadway ticket lines, these rush tickets can be purchased online.
The RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) Museum offers free admission for everyone on Sunday afternoons and during evenings of each month’s third Thursday. MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York has free admission for all visitors every Friday evening, as a part of their “UNIQLO Free Friday Nights.” And every Wednesday night, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has a voluntary contribution policy.
Make sure to do some ticket research before your next day of artistic exploration. Theaters and museums across the country are working hard to provide affordable options for everyone. Why not take advantage?
