Sarah Rush, a graduate student at Emerson College, joins the PSG team as a Spring 2017 intern. An organized and logical thinker, Sarah also happens to be a lucid dreamer. With control of her dreams, it’s not hard to imagine that she has a firm grip on her reality as well. While pursuing her master of arts in Publishing & Writing at Emerson, she was drawn to PSG’s immersive learning environment. PSG is the perfect place for Sarah to bridge theoretical with practical, translating her knowledge from the classroom into the skills she needs to succeed in her career. Sarah’s dream job is in publishing, working as a copyeditor for a trade press that focuses on fiction—ideally a press dedicated to fantasy, science fiction, horror and all things otherworldly.

As an undergraduate at Brandeis University, Sarah dipped her toes into editing while working for the literary magazine Laurel Moon. She loved “polishing the writing and trimming down clutter, strengthening verbs and adjectives, and varying sentence structure.” Sarah found the “red-pen work” incredibly satisfying, but also enjoyed the process of selecting a piece for publication in the magazine. Several of her own pieces were published in Laurel Moon as well as in the Merrimack Review, a literary and art magazine at Merrimack College.

In addition to her wordly accomplishments, Sarah also has quite the worldly background. She participated in a five-month martial arts course in Israel, and also spent time there volunteering with IDF soldiers. Prior to her Israel trip, Sarah had studied abroad at the University of Amsterdam, where she learned Dutch alongside her studies in poetry and psychoanalysis. Sarah has also volunteered at the Humane Society, working to help animals in her home state of New Hampshire. Her dedication and varied background has made her thoroughly prepared to tackle any task PSG has for her.

During her time at PSG, Sarah would like to learn as much as possible while enhancing her creative skills and craft at the same time. Her goals include learning about specific software used in publishing, about differences in standards and style guides, and how to cooperatively edit and interact between multiple departments. With her passion for publishing and love of hands-on learning, Sarah Rush is an excellent fit for PSG.
