With the sudden uptick in AI usage, people have either leaned away from it or embraced it entirely. In this case, AI has been an invaluable tool in moving forward to a future where all children are given the opportunity to have a proper education.
Stand Together Trust, a company that leads in education innovation, has decided to invest in the AI program, ‘Khanmigo’, with the help of Sal Khan, creator of Khan Academy. Khan Academy has an impeccable track record and is trusted by millions all over the globe with their child’s education. I have even had the pleasure of using this company as a tool to further my own education when I was in school. The pair has entered into a $20 million partnership that will span multiple years to support the furthering of this brand-new kind of technology. [1].
Released in March 2023, Khanmigo has been in its pilot stage, with more than 28,000 teachers and students using it by fall, with only more hope that it will continue to spread worldwide. [1].
The Benefits for Students
Unlike other AI programs, Khanmigo isn’t programmed to give students the answer, but rather have them conclude it themselves. By conversing with your child on how to find the right answer, it gives them a deeper understanding of the lessons being taught and allows them to engage critically with their own work.
Due to a shortage of teachers, students can also feel “left behind” if they are struggling with the lesson that is being taught. Since a teacher has other students to help, it can be difficult to give the proper attention to every student who needs it. Khanmigo serves as an online tutor whom your child can turn to at any time if they are struggling or falling behind.
The Benefits for Teachers
With teacher vacancies on the rise, current teachers are forced to pick up the slack. Many of them handle class sizes of 30 or more students, with little to no help or ability to give every student the academic attention they need. [2]. With the help of AI teaching aids, students can reach their fullest potential while teachers are pulled in fewer directions and have the extra help that they need to run their classroom.
Challenges With AI
While AI tools and programs have the potential to be invaluable resources for students—enhancing learning, streamlining research, and providing personalized support—they also present several challenges, both in their development and in discussions surrounding their use. The creation of reliable, glitch-free AI systems is a complex and time-intensive process that can take years of refinement, testing, and real-world application.
Parents may also feel hesitant about their children being taught by a computer, as many value the personal connection that comes from face-to-face interaction with a tutor or teacher. This concern can lead some parents to opt out of AI-based learning tools altogether, which could result in their children missing out on valuable academic support and falling behind their peers.
