The National Common Core Standards Initiative Is In The News Again
Ohio State education officials
have committed to following the National Core Standards for English and Math for grades K-12. This means that Ohio will not be releasing its own draft standards as planned for November but will wait until the National Common Core Standards are released in January. At that time, Ohio will review the National standards and determine if additional content needs to be added to their already drafted state standards.
Stan Hefner, associate state superintendent in Ohio, commented “. . . states that elect to adopt the Common Core must use the standards in their entirety, although they can add an additional 15 percent of state-specific comment if they choose. The standards also must be in use within three years of adoption.”
The curriculum standards for English, math, social studies, and science have been ordered by the Ohio General Assembly to be updated by June 30, 2010. As no common curriculum standards have been issued for social studies or science, Ohio will move forward to release those updates on schedule.
Pennsylvania has also put the release of its new standards on hold, so there is the possibility that other states will do the same.
