The Continuing Debate of “free content”
Free digital content continues to create discussion in the educational community. Educators, governors, and others think that if it is delivered on line, it should be free or cheap. However, those of us in the publishing industry know that the UMC to print the book is the least of the cost that goes into producing the product. It is a challenge to get educators and communities alike to understand that the same amount of research, planning, writing, etc. goes into producing quality educational product.
Just because it is on line doesn’t mean that delivering it will decrease the expense. In fact, as we all know, supplying the coding, servers, and other digital resources create just as much cost as printing and shipping a product. When the governor of California told his teachers to find curriculum on line that is free, he really opened a can of worms. We will have to stay tuned to see the impact of his statement.
Regardless of the format you select for your digital products, PSG is prepared to tag content for online delivery. Contact us about our complete services for your digital needs.
